Best-selling poet Chris Abani to speak Nov. 16 at Brainerd – Pine and Lakes Echo Journal


BRAINERD – Central Lakes College’s guest poet program, Verse Like Water, will feature acclaimed novelist, poet, essayist, screenwriter and playwright Chris Abani at noon on Wednesday, November 16 at the Chalberg Theatre.

A signing session and a conference on craftsmanship will follow.

Abani was born in Nigeria to an Igbo father and an English mother and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Imo State University in Nigeria; an MA in English, Gender and Culture from Birkbeck College, University of London; and a doctorate in literature and creative writing from the University of Southern California.

He has lived in the United States since 2001.

Abani’s fiction books include “The Secret History of Las Vegas”, “Song For Night”, “The Virgin of Flames”, “Becoming Abigail”, “Graceland”, and “Masters of the Board”.

Her poetry collections are ‘Smoking the Bible’, ‘Sanctificum’, ‘There Are No Names for Red’, ‘Feed Me the Sun: Collected Long Poems’, ‘Hands Washing Water’, ‘Dog Woman’, ‘Daphne’s Lot’. and “Kalakuta Republic.”

He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the PEN/Hemingway Prize, the PEN Beyond the Margins Prize, the Hurston Wright Prize and a Lannan Literary Fellowship, among many honours.

His work has been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, German, Swedish, Romanian, Hebrew, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Dutch, Bosnian and Serbian.
