It’s poetry month, haiku all through August with Red Room Poetry as they spotlight Australia’s brightest and brightest poets.
Red Room Poetry brings us the biggest month on the poetry calendar. Of course, we could say how much we love poetry to our last breath, instead we’ll present you with the facts because there’s a lot going on, so get ready and be sure to add it to your August diary.
Synonymous with poetry, Red Room has championed Australian poetry for over 19 years. Launching in 2021, Poetry Month (August 1-31) is here again to bring much-needed melodic depth and beauty to our lives, and luckily for us, Red Room Poetry has created poetry more accessible than ever.
Poetry Month is set to feature a stellar lineup of poetry celebrations and events showcasing Australia’s top poets. Daily poems, online workshops, awards and residencies, expect the best odes from seasoned winners, the next generation of sonneteers, there’s a haiku, verse, rhyme or ballad to suit everyone.
Poetry Month was launched perfectly with #30in30 by cultural historian, essayist and novelist Maria Tumarkin and her #PoetryMonth commissioned poem ‘War and Peace’ read the full version here.
This year’s poetry ambassadors include viral content creator and Olympic medalist Bronte Campbell, best-selling poets Courtney Peppernell; acclaimed author and Sisonke Msimang, acclaimed broadcaster and journalist Daniel Browning, and writer and comedian Nina Oyama.
The National Poetry Month Gala will be held on August 12 at the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Walsh Bay and is expected to feature Australia’s finest contemporary poets, with Eunice Andrada, Kirli Saunders, Jacqui Malins and Scott-Patrick Mitchell alongside PM Literary Poetry Award winners Omar Sakr and Sarah Holland-Batt and Daniel Browning, host of ABC’s The Art Show. Hosted by Alex Lee, the evening also includes comedians and actors such as Nat’s What I Reckon, Sacha Horler and Nina Oyama reading their favorite Australian poems, as well as a special musical performance by Ben Salter.
Keep your eyes peeled on Red Rooms 30in 30 as they deliver a poem a day from new original works by some of the country’s greatest poets, authors and spoken word artists.
The #PoetryMonth the program is officially online! 🎉 We look forward to spending August celebrating all the ways poetry inspires action, sparks new ideas and enriches our lives.
