Mysore/Mysore: Arguing that Holy Poet Kanakadasa was striving to eradicate the caste system, writer Chikkamagalur Ganesh said that Kanakadasa is the true face of secularism and harmony.

He was talking to Kanakadasa Jayanti celebrations organized by the district administration and Kanakadasa Jayantotsava Samithi in Kalamandira on Hunsur Road here yesterday.

Emphasizing that saints, seers, poets and others have always sought to see a peaceful and harmonious society, Ganesh said the Holy Poet used the Bhakti movement to bring about a change in society.

Noting that Kanakadasa was a symbol of ‘Janasamskruti’, he said the saint also effectively used the Bhakti movement as a panacea for many deep rooted societal ailments and ills. As such, today’s society badly needs an ambassador like him, he said, adding that most of the saint’s poems focus on nature, ecology, consciousness, etc

Deputy Commissioner Dr KV Rajendra said Kanakadasa wrote Keertanas under the pen name Kaginele Adikeshava more than 500 years ago.

Claiming that the saint devoted his entire life to correcting the wrongs and aberrations of society, he said that Kanakadasa was indeed a Rashtriya Santakavi for all the keertanas he wrote on the virtues of life. Observing that Kanakadasa’s preachings are highly relevant even today, Dr. Rajendra felt that the saint’s keertanas are a solution to the current problems that haunt society.

Previously, floral tributes were paid to Kanakadasa’s portrait. MLC Dr D. Thimmaiah, CN Manjegowda and Marithibbegowda, Mayor Shivakumar, Deputy Mayor Dr G. Roopa, former MP Somashekar MP, Chairmen of various councils and corporations – Raghu Kautilya, M. Shivakumar, Mirle Srinivas Gowda and G.
