Lane Kiffin’s time with Tennessee football was short-lived. He took over the Volunteers before the 2009 season and left after the 2009 season.

Kiffin was hired to take over the program after being fired from the Oakland Raiders, tricked the still-delusional fan base into believing their team was headed for the national championship, then rebounded for the job in Southern California. Pete Carroll went north to the Seattle Seahawks and his former offensive coordinator took over.

Tennessee fans, like everything, are always salty. Immediately after Kiffin’s announcement, they burned sofas and revolted in front of the Neyland stadium.

Now, 12 years later, they are shooting Kiffin ahead of his first return to Knoxville as a head coach. The 46-year-old is back on his old playground as an Alabama assistant in 2016 and – after beating the Flights – returned his visor to the crowd.

This year is different.

Kiffin is the head coach of the No.13 Ole Miss and Tennessee believe they won gold with head coach Josh Huepel. So the fact that the game is UT’s first true sold-out in nearly six years is no surprise.

Earlier this week, a Knoxville content creator wrote a poem to Kiffin and shared his reading on Twitter. Kiffin, who is very active on the social media site, found the video on Saturday morning before the game and couldn’t stop laughing.

He also, as he always does lately, hit the high road and wished the entire volunteer program and its fans good health.

Ole Miss and Tennessee kicks off from Knoxville at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Will Kiffin put his old team back in its place? Or will the Vols have the last word and their revenge?
