‘Nothing would be a greater honor than to work on this’: Midnight Club creator Mike Flanagan sets eyes on Stephen King’s Dark Tower after failed attempt by Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey


The failed adaptation of Stephen King by the king of horror The dark tower proved fatal for many. Mike Flanagan, the most successful horror director, said he wanted to reboot the film. The film would indeed be a hit as Mike Flanagan has many horror titles to his name.

After a failed attempt by Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in 2017, The dark tower became a massive failure generating little global box office profit.

Will Mike Flanagan revive Stephen King’s Magnum Opus?

Mike Flanagan is an honorary director with several horror titles to his name. Some of his best works include The Haunting of the Hill House, Oculus, and, Doctor Sleep. King of Horror Stephen King himself shares his penchant for horror.

The author of This wrote a series based on a poem titled “The Dark Tower”. It was in the year 2017 that Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba starred in a film adaptation of the book which failed miserably. During an interview with IGN, horror enthusiast Mike Flanagan has revealed his dream project to the public. Given the director’s status, King might just give the go-ahead for The dark tower new series to a movie/series adaptation.

“This is my dream project. And I keep coming back to it because… it has its own gravity. I can’t be away from it for too long. Nothing would be a greater honor or make me happier in my career than to be able to work on this. What would that look like? It would look like the book, you know?

Mike Flanagan also said how he imagined the adaptation would look like what he imagined a Lawrence of Arabia-desert scene with swaying wind.

“It would be a black screen and the words ‘The man in black fled across the desert and the gunman followed.’ The silence would appear, and you would hear the wind, and we would gradually fade to this landscape a la Lawrence of Arabia with a silhouette in the distance, weaving our way through the hardpan. And we would build it from there, in order, until the end.

After the disastrous failure of The dark tower film, Stephen King has become cautious in his choice of authorized adaptations. Mike Flanagan directed the sequel to the brilliant (1980) titled Doctor Sleep in 2019 which received a lot of praise and love from fans.

The dark tower is essentially the center of Stephen King’s horror universe. Each work written by the author combines The dark tower and so, it’s basically a big project to undertake. Asked about Mike Flanagan’s plan to make it a series or a movie, here’s what the Oculus director replied.

” It’s a serie ? Is it a feature film franchise? I do not know! It’s all of those things. It’s none of them. It would be my Everest to do that, but nothing would make me happier, and God I hope there’s a chance. I really do.”

Although there has been no official confirmation from Stephen King or any studio to take over the project, Flanagan’s enthusiasm seems quite high. Considering the masterpieces he managed to make, he could as The dark tower too.
