A unique initiative in which painters and poets interpret each other’s art is back at the Rosberg Gallery of the Niagara Falls Public Library branch on Victoria Avenue.

Last year, COVID-19 closures and restrictions meant the Poets and Painters program could only be done virtually. But with the restrictions now listed, the exhibit is once again hanging on the library walls ahead of National Poetry Month.

Each year, the collaboration brings together artists from the writing and visual arts. The library said the purpose of the exhibit was for writers to create a poem based on a painting and for painters to also create an artwork based on a poem.

To kick off this year’s exhibition process, 11 writers and 11 painters swapped names in two rounds at the end of 2020 and got to work.

“Inspiration, the fuel for creativity, comes from many sources,” Janice Low, one of the artists participating in the exhibit, said in a press release.

“The poets and painters of Niagara draw inspiration from each other,” she said. “Artists paint from stories and poems, and writers compose from artistic images. It is a unique challenge and a productive collaboration.

Participating writer Keith Inman said it was a unique experience to be part of the collaboration.

“Coming together with visual artists is a way to understand how a scene or setting moves through words,” he said. “For poets, taking inspiration from another medium is a great way to expand your knowledge of how images move through the eye and through the brain.

“I like the diversity that is produced by this process.”

The library said that as a community hub, an exhibit like Poets and Painters is one of the many ways library users can interact, connect and engage with each other, and is a way for residents to experience the facility in a new and exciting way.

The library’s general manager, Alicia Subnaik Kilgour, said she’s glad the exhibit is physically back at the library this year.

“Sharing the exhibition virtually last year got people interested in the artwork and poetry when we couldn’t get together, but to see it again at Rosberg Gallery is exciting,” he said. she declared. “We hope people will soon visit the library to experience the exhibit as it is meant to be seen.”

The Rosberg Gallery is dedicated to the memory of Harold David Rosberg and Joseph Lyon Rosberg, Niagara Falls businessmen. It features monthly exhibits of visual art from Niagara, as well as special traveling exhibits.

The Poets and Painters exhibition will be present in the branch of the library until May 31.
