Remember Everything: Poet Uwamahoro Shares Memorial Post | The new times

Famous American poet Malaika Uwamahoro has released a new poem reflecting the time when the world saw hell break loose in the country.

Uwamahoro’s poem comes as Rwanda marks the 28th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi which claimed more than a million lives in 100 days.

The writer published the poem as part of his role as an artist to spread a message as Rwandans commemorate. Below is the poem:

Remember everything…

The colonizers who

divided us…

Corrupt politicians who

encouraged us…

This world that has turned

It’s back on us…

Remember everything…

Hearts fill with hate,

Orchestrated killings,

Streets full of bodies

Passed to blood red,

Claiming loved and sacred lives.

Remember everything…

carrying survivors

Still wounds and scars…

Carry on… find the will…

For them,

There is no mercy for these

Memories,

No remedy for these grievances…

These injustices…

They still cut deep,

Always crawling… interrupting sleep…

They still disturb their daily tranquility…

So remember everything…

And remember your part…

Pay attention to your heart,

May it be a beacon of hope…

Watch your words,

May the active pain soothe him,

Protect and defend the TRUTH again and

Again…

Pay attention to your actions,

May they come only from love…

And may God from above be with us…

As we remember all of this…
