When director Peter Jackson took on JRR Tolkien The Lord of the Rings at the cinemas from the beginning of the years, many people seemed to believe that it could be a disaster for the films concerned, since it was considered a competition for Harry Potter on his first outing. After all, Jackson opted to film the initial three films in a row, a strategy that had never been applied on the scale the books called for at the time. But the film series has been incredibly successful, so much so that it now seems the original inspiration for The Lord of the Rings the books will see more stories added to their own franchise.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporterone of the main inspirations behind The Lord of the Rings book series, The Nibelungenlied, will be made into a feature film and there will also be a six-part event series based on the famous German poem. Written about 800 years ago by an unknown author, The Nibelungenlied is an epic poem that will form the basis of a new franchise titled Hagen, which is an upcoming reinterpretation of the German folk saga. Several actors have already been cast in the project for Constantin Film, including My wife’s story the actor Gijs Naber, Berlin station performs Jannis Niewohner, Lilja van der Zwaag and Dominic Marcus Singer.

Although it’s not the first time The Nibelungenlied has been adapted for the screen, this latest development is perhaps the most publicized portrayal of the poem since its beginnings in medieval times. A 2004 TV adaptation starred Alicia Witt and Julian Sands, but also served as a future acting debut Dusk and The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. Riding on the popularity of The Lord of the Rings franchise, it seems the 2004 TV movie didn’t achieve international fame, but this new adaptation might be one to watch.

Ring of the Nibelungs (2004)

Although JRR Tolkien was inspired by The Nibelungenlied before he wrote The Lord of the Ringsit’s obvious that the latter is a story worth telling on screen. The Lord of the Rings The franchise has so far included three films that have grossed nearly $3 billion at the box office against a budget of $281 million for the three films. The success of the first three films starring Elijah Wood and Cate Blanchett inspired Jackson to direct later The Hobbit film series, which grossed an additional $2.9 billion and starred Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Since then, Amazon has opted to produce its own prequel series of The Lord of the Rings entitled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is currently airing its first season. The show stars Morfydd Clark, Lenny Henry and Dylan Smith and takes place before the events of The Hobbit. The eight-episode first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will end on October 14 and is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
